What this assumes
  • Length, weight, area, volume, speed, time and data conversions use exact defined factors — an inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm — so they are precise to the digit, not estimates.
  • Temperature is an offset scale: the formulas are °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15, which is why 0 °C is 32 °F but 0 °F is −17.78 °C.
  • Guntha, cent, tola and bigha are region-specific and their exact size varies by state. They are marked approximate and should never be used on a legal document.
  • Currency rates come from a public reference source and refresh once a day. Your bank's rate includes a margin, and card networks add their own spread.

About the unit & currency converter

One converter for the units that actually come up in Indian daily life: centimetres and inches for furniture, square feet and acres for property, grams and tola for gold, litres and millilitres for fuel and cooking, and gigabytes for storage plans.

The currency tab converts the rupee against major currencies using rates you can edit. Live rates change constantly and a stale one is worse than an honest one, so the tool ships with an indicative rate, tries to refresh it from a public source, and always shows you exactly which rate it used and when it was set. You can overwrite any rate by hand for a transaction you already know.

Unit conversions for length, mass, volume, area, speed, temperature and data are exact definitions, not estimates, and they work even with no internet connection at all.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet is one acre?

One acre is 43,560 square feet, about 4,047 square metres, or roughly 40% of a football pitch. In north India one acre is also commonly described as 8 kanal or 4 bigha, though the bigha varies from state to state and should never be used for legal documents.

How do I convert inches to centimetres?

Multiply inches by 2.54, since an inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres. So 5 feet 7 inches is 67 inches, which is 170.18 centimetres, and the reverse conversion divides by 2.54.

Are the currency rates live?

The tool tries to fetch the latest daily reference rate when you open the tab, and falls back to a built-in indicative rate if it cannot reach the source. Either way the rate and its date are displayed, so you always know what you converted with — and you can type your own rate over it.

What is the difference between a short ton, a metric tonne and a quintal?

A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms, a quintal is 100 kilograms and is the unit used for grain and scrap prices in India, and a US short ton is 907.18 kilograms. Mixing them up is a common source of large errors in freight and agricultural quotes.

Why does temperature not convert like other units?

Because Celsius and Fahrenheit are offset scales, not just scaled ones. You cannot multiply to convert them; the formulas are °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. That is also why 0 °C is 32 °F but 0 °F is −17.78 °C.
