Choosing a presentation topic that holds an audience

A weak topic is usually a broad one. "Overview of Machine Learning" is impossible to say something specific about in ten minutes, so the deck ends up as a list of definitions and the audience checks their phone. A narrower topic — "How recommendation systems decide what you see next" — gives you something to argue with.

Good seminar topics sit where a course syllabus meets something the audience already has an opinion about. Pharmacy, commerce and management students can pick a regulation, a consumer behaviour, or a business case; engineering and medical students can pick a system, a failure, or a clinical protocol. All of them produce a better talk than an abstract survey.

Pick from the library above when you are stuck, then edit the wording so the topic is yours. A borrowed title with a real angle under it is far better than an original-sounding title you cannot fill.

Worth knowing

  • If you cannot finish the sentence "the main point of this talk is...", the topic is too broad.
  • Avoid a topic you cannot explain in one sentence without jargon.
  • Add a constraint — a region, a year, a population — to turn a survey into a study.
  • Check the topic against what has already been done in your class; a repeat gets less credit.
